Unique Selling Point:
Our guiding eco and ethical principles at cocoboat At cocoboat we not only use our principles of creativity, beauty and inspiration when choosing products, but also the need to work in harmony with our environment. These ethical principles are much broader and more complex than just the simple eco-friendliness. The world’s ecology is important to us all, and let’s face it ‘globalisation’ is not fundamentally environmentally friendly! Is uses up our finite natural resources and contributes to climate change. Mass farming and industrial production can also produce huge quantities of toxic waste. And it’s not just the production that has an effect on our environment. It can lead to exploitation of people in many ways too. So, we thought it would be a good idea to have a philosophy of guiding principles that include the ethics of the story behind the items we choose to offer you at cocoboat. These are: Made in the UK There are scores of great young designers and innovative manufacturers in our country. We applaud them, and support them wherever we can. We use the most cost-effective methods to transport their products across the UK. Manufacturing & Energy consumption We’re concerned about the impact of production. Does it damage the environment in any way? either by its use of local resources? or by the way it’s transported? How much energy is actually used to produce the item? So we always check how our products are being made. And if our items are made overseas we opt for sea freight, rather than air freight. Recycled and Recyclable We love recycling, whether that be in the creation of our products from vintage fabrics or factory waste cut-offs, to what you can do with the product at the end of it’s life! You can take for granted that we minimise packaging and keep it simple. Most of it can be recycled or reused, and our goal is to make all of it recyclable or re-useable. Reducing landfill waste is our aim here. Organic Cocoboat will always look favourably on products where the materials used are organically grown. Organic farming greatly reduces the fertiliser and pesticide loading that the world is subject to, and it also eliminates the possibility of pesticide-related toxins in the product. Sustainable We always ask ourselves if the materials used in making the product are from sustainable sources. Handmade We respect craftsmanship, so handmade items are important to us. It’s good to think that skills built up over generations can still produce products from traditional materials that look good in a 21st century home! The products are rarely perfectly identical, so there may be colour and size variations, but they always have that extra special “something” that’s created when such love and attention has gone into creating a unique item. Socially responsible We look at who makes it, and how they are organised. We won’t sell products where we don’t know the full story. We tend to favour co-operative or family unit production, because we feel that this reduces the probability of unfair exploitation. Fairtrade/Co-operative produced Globalisation can be a wonderful thing, especially when it allows us to buy goods from around the world in our local stores in the UK. For items we find further afield we look for their Fairtrade certificate or that the principles of fairtrade are being followed so that we know they are bring taken care of. These are our guiding principles and criteria. Everything you see on cocoboat meets at least one or more of these for your reassurance, and ours.
